Tulane students may study abroad, whatever their major. The Office of Study Abroad (OSA) oversees a diverse portfolio of yearlong and semester study abroad options for Newcomb-Tulane College. Over 80 study abroad programs in 30 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East are available to qualified undergraduates. OSA partners with top universities and study abroad organizations to make the highest quality overseas educational experiences available to Newcomb-Tulane students.
The Office of Study Abroad is located at 6901 Willow Street. The OSA maintains a resource library with information on approved Newcomb-Tulane Study Abroad Programs and their host countries. The OSA sponsors study abroad programs for undergraduates in nearly every field of study. Students do not have to be a foreign language major to study abroad. Students can study abroad and still graduate on time because credit hours and grades are awarded for all Tulane University study abroad programs. Furthermore, students work closely with their advisors to ensure that they will have the correct classes to graduate within four years.
Financing Study Abroad
There are various sources of funds to finance a student's study abroad experience. While the following information focuses primarily on federal and institution aid, students should explore other possibilities as well.
Federal Financial Aid
For eligible students, Pell Grants, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOGs), Perkins Loans, Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, and Federal Parent PLUS loans may be applied to Tulane JYA/JSA and Semester Abroad programs. Federal Direct Subsidized, Unsubsidized and Parent PLUS loans may be applied to Summer Study programs as well.
Tulane University Institutional Aid
Institutional aid takes the form of various merit scholarships/awards and/or need-based Tulane scholarship, athletic scholarships, and/or service scholarships. Tulane Housing scholarships may NOT be applied for international study. Tulane University Institutional Aid is not available for Summer Study programs, non-Tulane programs, nor Tulane programs not administered through the Center of International Studies.
Outside Scholarships and Grants
A number of study abroad programs offer small amounts of aid ($500 - $2,000), and some embassies offer scholarships to participate in programs in their countries. Students should check to see if such aid is offered for their study abroad program.
Other Loan Programs
Private, credit-based educational loan programs for students and their parents also exist.
How to Apply for Financial Aid for Study Abroad Program 2017-2018
Students interested in studying abroad may contact the Office of Financial Aid to discuss their financial aid options. Students are encouraged to bring their study abroad program and cost information if meeting with a financial aid counselor. Study abroad program and cost information is available at the Center of International Studies. Not all types of financial aid can be used for every program so students should review their sources of financial aid to see if they will apply to their program.
If the study abroad program allows federal aid to be used, students must complete the 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by April 15, 2017.
If the study abroad program allows institutional need-based scholarship to be used, students must complete the 2017-2018 CSS Profile by April 15, 2017. Students must also submit signed copies of their parents' complete 2015 federal tax returns, their own 2015 federal tax return and copies of their parents' 2015 W-2 forms to the Financial Aid Office by April 15, 2017. Students attending a study abroad program for the fall 2017 or spring 2018 should complete their financial aid application by April 15, 2017. If the study abroad program is a summer program, students must complete the Summer Abroad Addendum Form available on-line at the Financial Aid Office’s website after April 1, 2017.
Students can contact the Office of Study Abroad for information on the Study Abroad program budgets. In calculating need-based Tulane Scholarship for students studying abroad, we will use the study abroad budget rather than the standard cost of attendance budget.
Types of Study Abroad Programs
Tulane University Junior Year Abroad/Junior Semester Abroad (JYA/JSA)
The university's Junior Year Abroad/ Junior Semester Abroad program is recognized as an honors program of the university and is accessible to students in the School of Architecture, A.B. Freeman School of Business, School of Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and University College. These programs are open to qualified students of junior standing as well as selected sophomores and seniors. Prospective participants should be able to achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or 3.3 (depending on the program) prior to program participation.

Students may use institutional aid, such as merit-based and need-based scholarships, and federal aid, such as Pell Grants, Perkins Loans, Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Direct PLUS loans for Tulane JYA/JSA programs.
NO financial aid is available through Tulane for non-Tulane programs. Non-Tulane Study Abroad Tulane students may choose to study on a NON-Tulane program sponsored by another US university or organization or to enroll directly in a foreign university. The Center for International Studies (CIS) can provide students with information about non-Tulane study abroad programs. Students should inquire about financial aid from the institution/organization administering the program. Tulane will not process financial aid for the period of enrollment in such a program. Federal Perkins and Federal Direct Loan borrowers at Tulane should submit documentation to their lender(s) regarding their enrollment through another university or organization so that their lender does not contact them regarding repayment.
Tulane University Short-Term and Summer Study
Tulane offers a variety of short-term and summer study abroad programs through individual academic departments.
Students may use federal financial aid such as Pell Grants, Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants, Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Perkins Loans and Direct PLUS loans. However, institutional aid, such as merit-based and need-based scholarships, are NOT applicable to Short-Term or Summer Study Abroad Programs.
Students expecting to enroll in School of Architecture summer programs should contact the Office of Financial Aid directly regarding the availability of federal and institutional financial aid funds.
